This essay explores Geoffrey Chuacer’s Canterbury Tales especially focusing on the two tales portraying feminine discontent and masculine anxiety in marriage life in the medieval society: Januarie, the old knight in the Merchant’s Tale, is cuckolded by May, a newly-wedded young wife and the merchant in the Shipman’s Tale by Allison, an adulterous and avaricious wife. Although Chaucer might have used French fabliau, Boccaccio’s Decameron, and Italian Novellion, he transformed the original sources by leaving the immoral female agents unpunished, which, thereby, makes Chaucer’s male audiences feel anxious about their sexual incapability and also about the collapse of the moral justice which could result in both domestic and social disorder. Based upon historical evidences such as legal documents showing the publicization of male impotence and unsatisfied female sexual desire in court in the Middle Ages, this essay aims to argue that we could read the dynamic but unstable voices (from females and males) that Chaucer weaves into his tales.
