The purpose of this study was to investigate how eating-out frequency is related to glycemic control, diet quality and zinc status in type 2 diabetic patients. Seventy-six type 2 diabetic subjects participated in this study. Information on dietary intakes was obtained using 24-hours recall method. Fasting blood glucose and HbAlc were measured for the assessment of glycemic control. Zinc status was assessed from fasting plasma levels and urinary excretion. We evaluated the extent of dietary quality by nutrition adequacy ratio, index of nutrition quality(INQ), the dietary diversity score (DDS) and the dietary variety score (DVS). Fasting blood glucose level of the subjects who eat-out everyday was significantly higher than others. HbAlc were not significantly different across self-reported eating-out frequencies. There were no significant difference of dietary zinc intake and plasma zinc levels among the groups. Dietary inadequacy was serious for five nutrients riboflavin, calcium, thiamin, zinc and vitamin C. We found that subjects with more than 4 times eating-out frequency per week had significantly higher DDS and DVS compared to other (p<0.05), Therefore, we suggest that nutrition education for diabetic patients should include the tips for selecting eating-out menu patterns beneficial to improving dietary quality as well as glycemic control.
