This study examined the effects of a 4 weeks combined exercise program with resistance exercise and rope skipping of physical education lesson on body composition and physical fitness in junior high school students. Subjects were male and female students who were divided into 2 groups as experimental (19 male & 16 female students) and control groups (22 male & 15 female students). Body composition was measured by height, body weight, sit height, body mass index, skinfold thickness, body circumferences and the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference (WHR). Physical fitness was measured by grip strength, back muscular strength, 50 m sprint running, long jump, sit-up, push-up, sit and reach, Harvard step test and 1600 m running-walking test.
Percentage of body fat of the experimental male group decreased after the intervention, whereas that of the control male group increased after the intervention without significance differences. Waist circumference of the experimental male group significantly (p<0.05) decreased after the intervention, whereas that of the control male group significantly (p<0.05) increased. Waist circumference of the experimental female group was not significantly different after the intervention, whereas that of the control female group significantly (p<0.05) increased. WHR of the experimental group was not significantly different after the intervention, while that of the control group significantly (p<0.05) increased in both male and female group. Most itemsof physical fitness except for Harvard step test of the experimental and control group showed no significant difference after theintervention in both male and female group. The physical efficiency index (PEI) of Harvard step test of the experimental group was significantly (p<0.05) different after the intervention, while that of the control group was not significantly different in either gender group.
This result suggests an importance of combined exercise program with resistance exercise and rope skipping as part of physical education lesson for the positive improvement of body composition and cardiopulmonary function in junior high school students.
