To set up the basis for understanding and interpreting the structure and history of the Korean press, this study focuses on the lives of the dismissed journalists, composing a combined life history from various retrospection, memories, and opinions. Moreover, it also aims to call academic and social attention to those dismissals under the dictatorship which are greatly important cases in the process of democratisation of Korean society. Thus, asking these questions: What made them act differently from other colleague journalists who survived the press control; what made them dismissed among many other journalists; how have they lived after the dismissal; and how have their lives influenced Korean society and press, this study selects Dong-A Committee for Free Press for analysis, which has been having monthly meetings for almost 40 years since 1975, constantly working on ways for reinstatement, indemnification, and rehabilitation. In order to find answers to these questions, the study has gathered not only published materials on the lives of the dismissed journalists, but also personal memoirs presented for trial, in-depth interviews as an effort to pursue and construct the individual as well as public life history of the dismissed journalists in order to follow and sharpen the collective identity of the dismissed journalists. Arguing that the dismissals of journalists in the 70s and 80s are not merely past incidents but still significant events to understand the current condition of Korean press, this study is a new attempt to read the historical change and characteristics of Korean society and press through the life history of the dismissed journalists. This study is a homage to them.
