It is generally accepted that in the flux of political democratization since 1987, the autonomy and influence of Korean media have amplified as the state control has gradually diminished. In other words, Korean media could succeed in strengthening power and influence of their own, penetrating into the vacuum of power in which the authoritarian regime lost its grip in the process of political democratization.
This paper discusses the power dynamics between the state and the media in the context of Korean society. In the past, the Korean media used to be driven by the military dictatorship during the authoritarian government era; however, through the political transition and democratization process, they have been reborn as an independent power agent, which on the one hand try to maintain the boundary of the establishment(during the period of stability), while competing with other power agents over the dominance(during the period of crisis). Korean media are seen as solely obsessed with expanding its power and control over the society, exclusively relishing the fruits won from the political struggles for democracy.
It could be stated that political democratization does not guarantee "social democratization", when the media monopolize their power and do not substantially contribute to sharing the fruits of political democratization with the society. In order to realize the social democratization in a true sense, it is important to achieve media reform and to integrate and enhance the power of the civil society, pursuing "democracy" that is to be led up by the citizenry.
