This study is to find out the problems in competition and umpireship of Taekkyon which are exposed through the Taekkyon Match televised through special sports channel and then to look for ways to develop and activate the Taekkyon Match. To study the development way for Taekkyon, I had interviews with several core persons related to the Taekkyon Match and also collected and analysed the previous studies, data and regulations related to the Taekkyon matches, I made the following conclusions.
First, the regulation on the one fall win in Taekkyon helped the match to proceed fast and show the clear victory and defeat to the viewers. However, as time goes by, the victory and defeat is rather decided by bracketing the opponent"s leg with a foot rather the actual attack or technique. Accordingly, the leaping attack is now very rare and makes the match somewhat dull. So, the clear umpire regulation shall be prepared to motivate the player to use the leaping attack technique and shows more interesting plays to the viewer. Secondly, the study showed that the foul plays led to more attacks focused on the leg attack and showed the distinctive "gyeotgi" foul play system in Taekkyon, different from other martial arts. However, the rampant arbitrary umpireship by the referee breaks the smooth proceeding of the match and makes the game dull. So, the quality of referee shall be improved while the authority of main referee shall be strengthened. To improve the rules on gyeotgi, the gyeotgi shall be applied in accumulated way and the eduction shall be strengthened to the referee and the new rules of left and right gyeotgi shall be introduced so that the probability of win through gyeotgi is enhanced.
Third, the research on bontaeboigi (demonstration) showed that it put so much physical and mental burden on players Accordingly, the simple exemplary play for about for 10 seconds shall be required of the player for their physical exercise prior to game. Fourth, the research on referee system indicates that it shall be the 3-referee system centering on the chief referee and sub referees. Accordingly, it is recommended that the current supervisor referee system is to be abandoned and the 3-referee system composing of 1 chief referee and 2 sub-referees is introduced.
Like this, I have studied on what should be done for the increase of viewers and activation of the Taekkyon. I think that the mid- and long-term plan shall be established for the construction of the sports stadium specific for the Taekkyon and the professional teams shall be organized and sponsored by major local government or regional group and the economic investment shall be poured for activation of Taekkyon. For this purpose, the more interesting and useful rules shall be established full of tradition and the present, thus increasing the number of viewers, and finally increasing the quality of Taekkyon through the investment from advertisement agreement and sponsorship contract.
