The building of Choson Dynasty was not only a change of dynasty but also a transformation of civilization. It had been also a process of transition from the Buddhist society to the Confucian society. With the Confucian Transformation of Choson Dynasty, all aspects of society had been changed. The Social Status of Women was not an exception, and it had been changed fundamentally.
The Neo-Confucianism was a founding principle of a nation, namely a state ideology of Choson Dynasty. Nevertheless the transformation process was not a rapid and short one but a gradual and long one. Therefore the genealogical records on the family of 15·16 Century ? certainly they are good materials of social history ? show many various transient phenomenons. For example a relative equality between men and women of the Buddhist culture, a relative liberal marriage and remarriage of women, the style of marriage and commemorative rites for ancestors, and the equal division of properties between sons and daughters.
But with the Confucian transformation of Choson Dynasty, especially the latter part of Choson Dynasty after the 17th century had been a typical Confucian society. The social status of women was lower than that of the first part of Choson Dynasty. To sum it up, it was the rule of men based on the Confucianism. It had been accompanied by unequal division of properties between sons and daughters, the prohibition of remarriage of women, men’s monopoly of commemorative rites for ancestors, and the change of record patterns of the genealogical records on the family ? we can not find the record of daughter’s child.

조선 전기 여성의 지위와 사회적 위상은, 여성의 불평등 자체가 없었던 것은 아니지만 우리가 생각하는 조선시대의 이미지와는 상당 부분 다른 것이었다. 족보 기재 방식에서, 아들과 딸의 구분 없이 나이순으로 기재했다는 것, 외손이 기록되었다는 것, 양자 기록이 드러나지 않는다는 것, 그리고 재가 기록이 보인다는 점 등의 특징을 15·16세기 족보를 통해서 확인할 수 있다. 이는 조선 전기 균분상속, 남귀여가혼(男歸女家婚), 윤회봉사(輪回奉祀) 등과 맥락을 같이 하는 것이다.
이들이 전해주는 조선 전기 여성의 이미지와 사회적 지위는 불평등 그 자체는 아니었다. 자유로웠던 고려시대의 유풍이 아직 남아 있었다는 점, 그리고 유교 윤리가 아직 뿌리를 내리지 못했다는 점 등을 생각해볼 수 있겠다. 하지만 그 같은 여성의 가문 내 지위와 사회적 지위는 조선사회의 유교화와 더불어, 그리고 그런 경향이 한층 더 심화되는 조선 후기로 가면서 변화하기 시작했다. 따라서 조선사회의 유교화는 족보, 특히 족보에서 여성이 차지하는 위상에도 반영되지 않을 수 없었다.
그것은 임진왜란 이후의 사회 전반에 걸친 유교화의 심화 과정, 주자학적 예학(禮學) 윤리의 정착, 그리고 종법(宗法)적 부계 친족 중심의 문중(門中), 종중(宗中)이 형성되는 과정과 병행해서 일어난 것이었다. 사회 전반에 걸쳐서 부계 남성 중심 사회로 변해갔던 것이다. 족보에서도 외손을 기재하지 않게 되고, 아들을 먼저 적는 방식이 굳어지게 되었다. 이후 그런 추세는 더욱 가속화되었다. 17세기가 되면 재가 금지의 윤리가 양반사대부는 물론이고, 일반 평민에까지 확산되었다. 점차 수절(守節)이 당연한 것으로 여겨졌다.
여성의 정조 강조와 재가 금지는 법적인, 사회적인 제재를 넘어서 심리적인 제재까지 가하는 일종의 거대한 족쇄와 같았다. 그 같은 족쇄는 법적으로는 1894년 갑오경장 때 사라지게 되었다. 하지만 그 관성이 바로 사라질 수는 없었으며, 사회적으로 영향을 미치고 있었다. 그것은 지금까지도 조선시대 여성을 바라보는 시각마저 그런 것처럼 규정하게 되었던 것이다.
