In Search of an Alternative to American Exceptionalism agrees with U.S. historians who criticize american exceptionalism as a prejudice blocking objective understanding of the United States. For academia pursuing rigid objectivity there could be no argument against this. However, american exceptionalism is more than an academic prejudice distorting self-portrait of the U.S. For detached observers, both in and outside of the U.S., it is one of ‘american exceptionalities’ in that it has put an exceptionally expansionist, didactic and moralistic color on her foreign policy.
Criticizing american exceptionalism as a ‘hindrance to fair description of America’ is morally right and necessary, at least on the part of the U.S. historians and social scientists. However, for people studying the U.S. as a unique political civilization, it is one of undeniable exceptionalities of the ‘American Nation’, not just an academic prejudice permeated through american historical and social science discourses.
