This article examines the effects of interlocutor conditions with respect to test validity in two spoken language testing formats, testing in pairs and interviews. Questions regarding the effect of test interlocutor on performance have been raised in the literature with writers (Foot, 1999; Fulcher, 2003; Leung & Lewkowicz, 2006; Norton, 2005; Taylor, 2000) attributing performance effects to a variety of interlocutor factors. This article presents the results of a study which compared paired and interview testing across three dimensions: discourse, test scores and test taker perceptions. Especially important are the findings that in this study the differing test interlocutor conditions contributed to (1) the interviews having turns that were longer than those of the paired tests, (2) the greater use of certain conversational features on the paired tests and (3) differences in test preference. Also, it is argued based on the study results that it is the least proficient test takers whose test scores are most influenced by interlocutor differences.
