This study investigated adult Korean-speaking learners’ interpretation of English locative argument structures (e..g., Mary loaded boxes onto the truck vs. Mary loaded the truck with boxes). The second language learners were pre-tested on their knowledge of the syntax of English locative structures with a grammaticality judgment task. An English and a Korean version of a picture-cued sentence interpretation task were administered in order to examine the learners’ interpretation of ground and figure frames of their L2 and L1 locative verbs. Ten native speakers of English served as a control group. This study’s major finding indicated that the holism constraint applied more strictly to native speakers of English than to the L2 learners and that the latter’s non-targetlike interpretation of the English locative structures were similar to their interpretation of their L1. The data suggested that the very subtle interpretation covertly conflated in language might be a considerable challenge for L2 learners.
