In English, as in a typical satellite-framed language, the directional meaning is usually expressed by specialized directional prepositions like into or onto. With a small set of verbs, however, the same meaning can instead be expressed by locative prepositions. This paper explores restrictions on the use of this less studied strategy for encoding the directional meaning. It is argued that English has no locative prepositions that are lexically ambiguous between a locative and a directional reading. Rather, prepositions like in, on, under or behind are locative only in the sense that any meaning of directionality has to be licensed by other means. It is also shown that their appearance in directional contexts is further influenced by a number of pragmatic or contextual factors, including other elements of the sentence, such as the verb or a directional particle.
