There are several motivations for this paper; it can inspire consideration to the cultural exchanges between Korean literature and Chinese literature which overlooked in the history of modern Korean literature, it can give a chance to reconsider the outcome of Korean and Chinese literature in early 20 century which has been far undervalued, and it can give an opportunity to review the relation between Korean literature and Chinese literature which has been little studied in the history of modern Korean literature.
In the history of modern Korean literature, Yang Kun Sik’s efforts as a messenger of Chinese literature achieved fruitful results. Heworked very hard to translate and spread not only modern Chinese literature but also Chinese classic novels and plays. While most of intellectuals advocated civilizations and reforms of the West and Japan, only Yang Kun Sik translated and introduced Chinese traditional novels not for restoration but for our own modernization based on the harmony of the newness of the West and the objective evaluation of traditional literature. As a conclusion, it is necessary to set a new and high valuation on the literary result and value of Yang Kun Sik"s acceptance and translation of Chinese literature in the history of modern Korean literature.
