Objective: The aim of this study is to develop DIY eye tracking system which is economically accessible for study of human eye movement. Background: Eye tracking technologies are applied to the two areas: (1) for diagnostic applications and (2) for interactive applications. As interests in eye tracking technology increases, researchers attempt to reduce the cost of eye tracking. Method: Existing low cost eye tracking technologies were benchmarked and the critical five components consisting eye tracking system were identified; (1) eye movement (2) lock on the eye (3) image input (4) tracking (5) recording. Specific hardware and software were selected to draw optimum performance and layout of each component was studied. Results: Iris and pupil were successfully tracked with the developed system and the result of calibration was illustrated. Conclusion: Development of low cost eye tracking system was feasible, although there are reservations on reliability and usability issue. Application: The developed system could be used for simple gaze tracking and analysis if the amount of effort required for setting and calibration could be minimized.
