The essay centers on Richard Kearney"s anatheistic reconstruction of the divine nature in light of possibility. This essay gives a special focus on the methodological aspects of Kearney"s anatheism appearing at the time of deconstruction. Following Heidegger"s critics of onto-theo-logical gods and Ricoeur"s hermeneutics, Kearney constructs a variety of anatheistic refigurations of the divine under the thematic names, phenomenology of persona, transfiguring God, desiring God, and possibilizing God. Kearney"s anatheistic project considers old metaphysical deities a mode of knowing derived from onto-theological desire, and he juxtaposes it with eschatological desire. Kearney"s method in doing anatheism mostly rests on poetics and imaginary dynamatology.
This attempt succeeds in making two significant transitions out of onto-theological thinking: first, Kearney gives a qualitative priority to possibility over actuality, and he identifies the former with the divine nature. Second, Kearney rethinks the Kingdom as indecidable as it is open to the mutual acts of giving and possibilizing between God and the world. Within these two directions, Kearney helps us imagine the divine act as possibility which enables the world to create and recreate new meanings without recourse to the idea of teleological totalization. Kearney calls it eschatological God in place of onto-theo-logical god as self-sufficient being. Also the essay illuminates the way Kearney deals with the traditional ideas of omni-divine and emblem of sovereignty. Instead of figuring God as unilateral, unchanging, or actualizing reality, Kearney"s anatheism draws on reciprocal, other-centered, transfigurable, and weak figures of God. Through these works, Keaney calls for the space where human responsibility in the Kingdom becomes irreducibly crucial.
