Can life sharing activities such as ‘organ donation’ and ‘blood donation’ be justified for curing emergent patients or physically disable person? Can biblical basis for these be found? These are the essential questions to be raised so that we may have a theological basis for life sharing activities. The Bible, of course, does not contain terminologies such as ‘organ donation’ or ‘blood donation.’ However, I argue that ‘serving’ or ’sharing’ which is an outer expression of neighborly love or brotherly love can have a theological basis. The purpose of this study is to search for life terminologies used in the Old Testament and one of its translation, LXX, then investigate two core terms ‘psyche’(ψυχ?) and ‘zoe’(ζω?) used in the New Testament. With researching these, I will try to figure out a proper direction for life sharing and it biblical basis.
The New Testament does not show any special interest in the neutral concept of life. Rather, the term ‘life’ is used with relation to human salvation in constrast to ‘death.’ Although each book of the Testaments has different emphasis, ‘life’ indicates not simply being alive or physical vitality, but the reality of those saved by believing Jesus Christ, the son of God, as if ‘death’ indicates not a simple status of physical death, but a status under the power of sin. ‘Life’ in the New Testament is not determined by its span, but by the quality of life. Thereby the message that if anybody loses his or her life for the Lord and His Gospel will be saved in right relationship with God is the central teaching on life.
Presupposing the biblical message above, the characteristics of the two terms on ‘life’ in the New Testament can be summarized as follow. First, the term ‘zoe’(ζω?) is used soteriologically for sinful man’s salvation on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is used eschatologically in terms of eternal life after the resurrection of the dead. Secondly, the term, ‘psyche’(ψυχ?) is used to mean ‘lively existence of man.’ Compared soteriological and eschatological term, ‘zoe’(ζω?) with anthropological term ‘psyche’(ψυχ?), it is ‘psyche’(ψυχ?) rather than ‘zoe’(ζω?) which can be applied for biblical basis for life sharing activities. Since Jesus Christ has laid His life for redemptive sacrifice and became a model for serving others, Christians who gained His life by believing in Him also can serve others by sharing their lives(psychai). This can be a proper biblical basis for ‘organ donation’ or ‘blood donation.’ Biblical life sharing is not biological nor medical ’self division’, but practice of neighborly love which is shown by the death of Jesus Christ and its embodiment. When life sharing activities like ’organ donation’ and ‘blood donation’ become godly love shared in Jesus Christ, these will be missional activities.
