With the concept of "Arumdaum" and "Goeum" Mut is one of the categories consisting of Korean aesthetic consciousness. The important issues in the study are following. First, the relation of Mut with Mat is newly studied. Second, Mut as an untranslatable concept is reviewed adequately on the basis of earlier theories. Third, the study reviews "Mut" as a practical idea or education objective. Considering these themes the present study has been completed by checking out earlier theories.
Unlike the existing studies the study reviewed the following questions. The first question is the relation between Mut and Mat. These etymological or generative relations are analyzed with the pragmatic or semantic, aesthetic relations. The study has reviewed the correlative relations of all the complex words implication Mat and Mut. The usage of Mut in the 1890s appeared in the words of "Mutdaero." There is no clear evidence that the word of Mut has derived from the transformed word of Mat.Although etymological relation of Mut with Mat is used with unrelated meanings besides aesthetic feeling, aesthetic consciousness, tastes, and Heongchi, it can be admitted. Second, is Mut a Korean characteristic category of aesthetic consciousness? That is to say that Mut cannot be translated into other languages, since it is a unique Korean taste. Mut is not characteristic beauty of Korea due to such a reason.
However, through the debate of Mut and Mat in 1950s, the fact that Mut is Mat has come to a new theory. Since then many arguments that Mut is a pronoun of Korean has been suggested. Against those theoretical backgrounds, Mut of Korea represents Korean aesthetic consciousness with an ellipsis.
In brief, the word of Mut basically represents comprehensive aesthetic consciousness, but in the context of theory the word can be used in suggesting the Korean characteristics of aesthetic consciousness. Joh Jihoon discussed aesthetic contents of Mut in three kinds of viewpoints: (1) Mut as formal beauty, (2) Mut as expressive beauty, and Mut as mental beauty. This classification was divided into internal motivation of art work and creative motif correlated with aesthetic consciousness of Mut.
