Shin, Chae-ho is often considered to be a symbol of modernity in the field of Korean historiography. He propounded the concept of “New History,” and used it as a means to express the crisis of national ruin. He has however never clearly explored the new meaning of the word “history” as is implied by his work. Moreover, the word “history,” as applied to New History neither indicates a particular symbol nor a direction. The word which led Shin to historical writing sometimes expresses expectations of the future or forthcoming age, but is also used as a tool to recall memories of the remote past. Therefore, it is not easy to derive a particular value from his “history,” which can cause methodological confusion. Historical semantics suggests a clue to approaching this problem. Begriffsgeschichte (history of concept) particularly considers “history” as Bewegungsbegriff (concept of movement) that embraces past experiences and expects new generations of thought. This metaphor can also suggest a new prospective toward methodology. Metaphor delivers a more basic and pictorial meanings than its conceptive assets. Metaphor, in this sense, can convey the memories and nostalgia, yearning and disillusion, and interest and disinterest that have accumulated in the foundation of an ideology or political action in an era as a complete, symbolic system. This essay is concerned with exploring the strained relations within methodology, and how a system of metaphor may be applied as suggested by Shin"s New History work.
