Recently, much attention has been focussed on the use of plant-based phytopharmaceuticals and phytonutrients for prevention or as adjuncts to conventional therapy. In conjunction with the current concern about the practice of complementary and alternative medicine for the management of a wide array of human disorders, the use of herbal medicine has been increasing worldwide. Numerous biologically active substances derived from herbs and spices have been reported to possess the therapeutic potential. The rapid progress in our understanding of the cellular signal transduction pathways thaat are subjected to fine-tuning has paved the way to unveiling the molecular milieu of cellular homeostasis. Our current research program concerns the evaluation of cancer chemopreventive and cytoprotective effect of some anti-inflammatory phytochemicals present in dietary and medicinal plants and their underlying molecular mechanisms. These include curcumin (Curcuma longa L., Zingiberaceae), [6]-gingerol (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingiberaceae), capsaicin (Capsicum annum L., Solanaceae), eupatilline
(Artemia asiatica Nakai), and yakuchinone A and B (Alpinia oxyphylla Miquel, Zingiberaceae). All these phytochemicals have been found to exert chemopreventive
activities by blocking aberrant NF-kappaB signaling, which often occurs during inflammation-associated carcinogenesis. Alternatively, some phytochemicals, by inducing transcription of antioxidant genes, can potentiate cellular defence capacity against oxidative injury which is implicated in pathogenesis of many human ailments. Modulation of cellular signaling pathways thus represents an essential components of evidence-based chemoprevention of cancer and other malfunctions.
