Tocqueville wanted to be a “New Kind of Liberal” in a way of criticizing and taking distance himself from both the “dirty democrats” and the “friends of order.” These two groups, according to Tocqueville, respectively represented the leftist democrats and the rightist conservatives in the nineteenth-century France, or European society in general. Tocqueville believed that “morality, religion and order”, on the one hand, and “freedom and equality”, on the other hand, must be pursued at the same time, because they are key elements for the human greatness and happiness. Tocqueville argued that the “dirty democrats”and the “friends of order”committed fatal mistakes by looking down upon this manifest truth and, thus, opened the way to material individualism and petty pleasures. He emphasized the urgency of the revival of the “great politics” and advocated the “New Kind of Liberalism”as an antidote for the humane tragedy.
