It seems to be impossible to set Kut into a independent Genre categoty. In other words, the existing Genres cannot successfully explain its nature and contents. The reason is that genre is not the one which exists in the real world, but is the absttact and conceptualized tetm. Also, the term itself has been shifted according to the social-cultural context. As a result, we are not sure that we have had a full understanding of Korean ‘premodern culture’ and Kut with the help of the existing Genre classification.
Nowadays, Genre-integration or Genre-collapse for today’s art is more spreading, and such kind of solution need to be used for setting a genre for Kut.
Simple classification of Kut into a classical genre category is no more effective because Kut can’t be measured for only one classical genre category like dance, music, drama and so on. Likewise, Kut can’t be seen as a work because it includes play.
In conclusion, there are reasons for setting a new and independent genre for Kut and this will contribute to having a correct understanding on Korean traditional arts which have been regarded to be premodern or worn-out.
