This paper aims to examine how Buraku culture has been constructed in contemporary Japanese society by particularly focusing on Buraku boys who ended up with middle school certificates. To do so, the second chapter in this paper illuminates the fact that Burakumin’s non-credentialistic dispositions are predicated on their discriminatory experiences in Japan’s modern education system. The third chapter shows that these dispositions may negatively affect Buraku students’ educational attainment as Buraku communities have been socially and politically divided since the 1990s. The fourth chapter finds that an educational practice, through which elementary school teachers prioritize Buraku boys’ manual over academic education, may create a peer group in which physical strength matters. In conclusion, this paper mentions that Buraku culture is not innate traits of the Burakumin but a product of social processes against them in modern and contemporary Japan. Furthermore, research on formations of Buraku culture may contribute to reconsidering the concept of ‘culture of poverty,’ thereby understanding cultural processes through which class inequality are reproduced from generation to generation.
