Since the 90s, the system of family has lost its self-evidence, and become subject to questions in various dimensions. Especially, the family as a stabilized community based on blood and unchanged love has been deconstructed or is placed in crisis. With this as subject matter, there have appeared several juvenile novels exploring new family ethics. This study pays attention to Lee Geum-i’s the Bamti Town Trilogy, Choi Na-mi’s A Thirteen Year Old Loaded with Concerns and Mother’s 40th birthday among others. We can name these works ‘high family juvenile stories’ as they figure the changing realities of family and contain reflection on family and family members.
From the omniscient viewpoint, Lee’s the Bamti Town Trilogy well figures the course in which the stepmother is recognized as a true mother by all of the family members. Especially, it is one of its merits to deconstruct the myth of ‘Cinderella’s stepmother,’ which reflects children’s fear of stepmother. However, in acceptance of the traditional features of mother, this work dissolves individual family members into the family. After all, it does not deviate much from the familiar framework of family tale, called Ga-Hwa-Man-Sa-Seong (家和萬事成).
Choi’s A Thirteen Year Old Loaded with Concerns is focused on the main character who lives with his mother and sister after his father left home, and her Mother’s 40th birthday on the hero who worries in the conflict between his father and mother who does not care for her sick grandmother in law but resume their own jobs. Both of the two works put up first person narrators who are in the 6th grade of elementary school to emphasize that they form their own independent world even in conflicts. These two works are closer to the concept of high family juvenile stories with the background of family realities as they put greater importance on individual members’ agonies than on the entire family’s.
