This paper explains the following questions : why do some of adjectives serve as adverbial in the sentences? why don’t some of adjectives serve as adverbial in the sentences? This analyses is conducted under the theories of cognitive grammar and semantics. In the process of solution to these essential questions, I explored what characteristics do the words that can be admitted to the place of adverbial need to have? and why do those words that don’t have the characteristics required for the place of adverbial come into the place? This paper find out that whether adjectives can be put in the place of adverbial is mainly decided by their requirements for semantic meaning. also explicate the fact that why only those words that do not have these characteristics required for the place of adverbial come into the place rather than other words. Depending on the context, select the appropriate expression, is not easy for foreign students taking Chinese as a second language. And we are sure that the paper has some guiding significance study of Chinese language teaching.
