The multi-factors which influenced the themes of The Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan) and its derivatives can be assumed and simplified as two kinds of complex patterns. One of them was expanded according to the internal subjective factors such as the thought, the consciousness, the social experience and the education level of its original author, its editors as well as its critics. Another pattern was combined with the external objective factors such as historical, political and social situations.
This study is focused on the path of development surrounding both patterns we mentioned above.
First, although the story of The Water Margin was based on a political and social background by the Song Dynasty(960-1279), but actually it reflected the same fact about the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), of course, it could also be used to reflect any similar kind of politics and society in the history of China.
Secondly, from a literal aspect, we found that The Water Margin is a great work created both by lower civilians and upper intellectuals, alternately. There were many short and independent stories about the heroes of Liangshan already spread widely and separately all around the country before the formal novel of The Water Margin published.
If we no longer premised subjectively with a moral and political philosophy and just classify the themes based on a coherent thought, idea, life, images and characteristics of a character, etc. The Water Margin, no doubt, is a tremendous treasure house. The large number of character, complex plot, long history and complicated developing process always make readers fall into an endless space of imagination, from which many new and independent themes will be derived simultaneously.
We have set up a series of hypothetic themes such as: “the trend of religion”, “the philosophy in a chaos world”, “the pursuit of ideal”, “the national sentiments”, “the role of heroes”, “the consciousness of revenge” etc, then those universal values, we supposed, can get a common acknowledge from the readers who are really concerned about this great work.
