In this paper, the resistance of students and its bound are researched for women education in colony through the analysis for Sookmyung women school student strike broken out in 1927.
The women education proceeding since the Gab-o revolution was largely grown up in big increase rate of entering school as competing for entering school in the 1920th years. However, the education idea was not close to modernized woman’s identity because the women education was based on Japanese education and good wife and wise mother.
Although there were little differences in Japanese colony, most of schools including Sookmyung women school had been educating to be Japanese. Especially, since the Japanese ruling time, women schools had been focused on practices like home making and sewing not to cover national and social awareness for students.
In particular, Sookmyung women school was more intervened since established by the policy of colonial rule because it was established and administrated by Korean royal house.
The superficial reason of Sookmyung women school’s strike broken from May to September in 1927 was to exclude Japanese teachers, however, the fundamental reason was resistant to Japanese of the school. Sookmyung women school was established by Korean royal house’s fund, accordingly, the colonial government supervised the school in overweight and education were centering on Japanese, and finally in 1927, 15 of 22 teachers were Japanese as becoming that the school did look belonging to Japanese’s. Thus, the united strike of Sookmyung women school was the main reason of resistance against Japanese of the school and Japanese colonial education.
The characteristic which the united strike of Sookmyung women school had, was that: for students’ request, students’ parents association, Yangmyung association organized by alumni from Sookmyung/Jinmyung/Yangmyung which Empress Um supported establishment, Sook-Yoeu association of Sookmyung women school alumni group, as well as socially, Chosun student scienece research association, Singan association, Geun-U association, Central women youth alliance, etc, many associations kept interesting and pressing, finally, the school authority was made to accepting students’ request.
In many social interesting, the united strike of 1927 year made to accepting mostly for students’ request, however the basic idea of women education could not be changing but keeping in the drastic bound of colony. Hence, female students were on self struggling under the paternal culture to be obedient women the colony government kept forcing.
