It seems that Japanese are have a tendency of thinking that their culture have had not been influenced by Korean historically as much as Chinese. It is true that to the Japanese Chinese cultural impact had been stronger and more extensive than Korean. However, at the same time, it is also true that Korean impact on Japanese culture was very important factor although Japanese have not showed an enthusiastic attitude towards it. In the course of history, the true have had been underestimated or hidden or distorted due to political purposes.
This paper tries to trace and examine the aspects of Korean Images found in throughout Japanese history. As a result of it, I confirmed that Korean Images in Japanese History had been developed following the steps of formation in the period of Yamato(大和), succession in the time of Wako(倭寇), establishment in the period of Japanese invasions of Korea(壬辰倭亂), and fixedness in the period of Treaty of Ganghwa(江華島條約), and all of these wrong Korean Images were originated by the ambition which Japanese rulers want to be at high rank against nations in Korean Peninsula. However, this superiority complex was changeable rather than consistent, which was aroused at the everytime when Japanese rulers want to need it, because they, ‘the people of Sea’ could not be enough independent without cultural interchange with Korea ‘a hostile country’ of Japanese imagination. They have to accept cultural elements from China by way of Korea, or directly from Korea. It seems that the Japanese disposition consisted of so-called ‘Tatemae(立前)’ and ‘Honne(本音)’ is also found at the situation of their foreign policy to Korea.
In conclusion, I repeat that the flow of culture in East Asia in the past from China to Korea and Japan, or from Korea to Japan.
