The sun and father conflicts, which rose from unprecedented events, namely, their re-enthronement that lasted from the 24th to the 34th of the King Chungnyeol’s reign, had great effects on a political force sector or the change in the relationship between Goryeo and Yuan. Among the events, the King Chungsun’s returning to Goryeo and Princess Kyeguk’s remarriage that were proposed in the year of the 27th(1301) to the34th(1308)of the King Chungnyeol’s reign were the foremost matters of life and death for both sides.
Those studies on the situation of the time over the King Chungsun’s returning to Goryeo and the remarriage movement for Princess Kyeguk have been carried on by dealing with the trends of the time’s political situation or political force, or by forecasting the relationship between Goryeo and Yuan Dynasties with an intensive analysis on the ways of Yuan Dynasty’s political power.
Consequently we can get the comparatively detailed information about king Chungnyeol or king Chungsun’s positions and the flows of the political forces of Goryeo and Yuan which stood or fell together with them, but, in fact, almost none of the study about the princess’ position who was the party to the movement and her close associates has been conducted. Of course, there exist the studies which tell that the princess was in the “totally leader” position in the remarriage movement, but they are somewhat insufficient only to demonstrate a few segmantal facts without systematic description of the princess’ role at each stage of the concrete process of the event.
Thus, in this study, I sought the detailed condition of the sun and father conflicts that lasted from the 24th to the 34th of the King Chungnyeol’s reign through the remarriage movement, observing the princess’ symbolic power influencing the succession to the throne of the Goryeo Dynasty with the examination on her stand about the event and when and how her intervention was carried out.
The remarriage movement was conducted largely covering three times, and in relation to each movement, she wasn’t just a “passive participant” only being a subject of prior mutual response by King Chungnyeol, the prime mover of the movement. In the 2nd movement, she seemed contribute to some degree to the status rise within the Yuan Dynasty of Seo Heung Hu, her remarriage partner. And in the 3rd movement, she showed an active behaviour forbidding the entrance of Whang Yu So to the king’s place when he was accused of taking the lead of remarriage movement for her. I’m[the present writer is] observing the Yuan princess’ symbolic power influencing the succession to the throne of the Goryeo Dynasty with such active intervention.
The princess was a member of Kubilai Khan family with as many attendants as befitting her status and economic basis corresponding to that status as being a princess. Besides, her status, a Yuan princess married to a Goryeon man, was that which could have decisive influence on the heir to the Goryeon throne, and it seems she knew fully of her symbolic power that how it effected on in and out of Goryeon political circles.
In other words, she knew the serious political whirlwind that her divorce and remarriage would bring out, and knew precisely what she would get from that, and so, she made full use of it in the course of remarriage movement.
