This study is about the Inferno in the 〈Last Judgment〉, the fresco of Scrovegni Chapel of Padova, between 1300 and 1305 by Giotto, an Italian painter of the 14th century. In particular this study has its purpose in examining the material thinking about the salvation of the soul of the merchant class that led the western society of the 14th century, analyzing the scene of the Inferno in the socio-historical point of view.
Scrovegni Chapel is the church that Enrico Scrovegni dedicated to the Virgin Mary to save the soul of Reginaldo Scrovegni who was his father and a famous usurer of Padova that was sent to the Inferno in La Divina Commedia by Dante, and he let Giotto, a painter that represents Firenze of that time, paint 〈Last Judgment〉 on the western wall inside the chapel.
Traditionally all of the seven cardinal sins based on The Seven Deadly Sins were reproduced in the Inferno scene of 〈Last Judgment〉. However we come to mainly meet the scenes that visualized the cardinal sins of Greed and Lust in the Inferno scene of Scrovegni Chapel. For example, the realistic expressions of souls that are being punished hung by the neck hanging a moneybag and monks that are hung on a branch naked frankly show the material social aspect of the 14th century that was an era when the development of the merchant class gained the summit.
The 14th century was an era that changed from the feudal society centering on noblemen that attached importance to spirituality into a society of the merchant class that was practical and attached importance to material thinking. Merchants built and dedicated churches as the price to obtain the salvation in the world after death guaranteed on the basis of their wealth and decorated the inside of churches with 〈Last Judgment〉. Now the salvation of a human soul could be done through materials and usurers that are neither members of the royal family nor noblemen nor high-ranking clergymen came to be able to obtain the salvation of their souls. In addition, the moment in which materials display their values for the salvation of souls is confirmed the best on the 〈Last Judgment〉.
