Today, not only are many of Shakespeare's plays rewritten and put on the stage, but they are adapted as a film in multiple ways. But no Shakespeare's plays have been more cinematized than Hamlet. According to Neil Taylor, at latest count there have been more than ninety film-versions of the play. These phenomena have come from all over the world including Europe and Asia, as well as mainly from Britain and America.
Hamlet has been regarded as the man of indecisive character in the light of procrastinating revenge. He has been compared with Don Quixote who is foolhardy. For this reason, the focus of a dispute on Shakespeare's Hamlet has lied in analyzing his character. Namely, many of experts on studying Shakespeare have presented a variety of interpretations and analyses on 'Does Hamlet procrastinate his revenge?' and if so, 'Why does he do so?'. These questions are diversely answered by directors' viewpoints in the films.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the aspects of procrastination in Hamlet has been managed, while illuminating Shakespeare's Hamlet for the films, which have become one of the major means to enjoy literary work. Laurence Olivier analyzed and directed Hamlet with his own viewpoint. In this thesis, this film is selected to be analyzed, as that are from him leading the popularization of Shakespeare with Orson Wells and Kenneth Branagh.
Olivier rearranged the scenes by abbreviating a considerable sum of lines and excluding some of the characters from the original. His approach to defining the reality of morally corrupted Denmark is the ethical one, completely ruling out political factors which can estimate the aspect of procrastination in Hamlet, After the emergence and exposure of the ghost, Hamlet gives priority to accusing Gertrude of her sin, which was to betray her husband and committed adultery with her brother - in - law over, taking revenge against Claudius, who killed father Hamlet and seized the throne.
Recently, Hamlet has been mentioned and constantly cinematized by experts on studying Shakespeare. This film attracts the public attention in the light of keeping in tune with the best director and actors at that time, More important fact is that even though Laurence Olivier used the classical lines from Hamlet, he made a very distinct characteristic Hamlet, Thus, it is a very interesting work to analyze and explore the aspects of procrastination in Hamlet after comparing the original with the adapted Hamlet for the film.
