The study on the thoughts in the book of “Change”(『易』) is the one consistent in the courses of learning that Chang hyungwang had carried on from beginning to end. In his youth, he determined that the study on thoughts in “Change”(『易』) is supposed to be one of the best tasks to devote himself above all, considering his ultimate goal of learning as becoming a best man in the world through the study of “Change”(『易』). This is the reason why he compiled “Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』), a sort of encyclopedia that the existing sources of traditional thoughts in “Change” are arranged in. On the firm basis of its work, he wrote “A theory on nature and reason”(『性理說』), stating with his creative thoughts.
In order to examine his thoughts more accurately and professionally, it is absolutely necessary to reflect carefully on the contents and the thoughts in “Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』). However, there are several difficulties that we cannot go easily on this approach. These difficulties can be presented as three points of views. Firstly, this book of ??Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』) has massive materials and contents about thoughts in “Change”(『易』). Secondly, this book is organized with two main categories, diagrams and their explanations. Thirdly, this book is compiled by Chang hyungwang with many resources from existing materials, but it is not a creative work by him in his own words. These above facts make scholars difficult to approach the thoughts of Chang hyungwang on ??“Change”(『易』). Above all, third problem has especially brought up serious obstacle to people who try to find out the originality of his thoughts. Thus, some scholars has often made a choice to interpret the correlation of features in “Change”(『易』)” with his concepts and thoughts ill nee-confucianism, However, changing our way of thinking into sorts of viewpoints in natural science, third problem couldn’t bother any more.
Considering that it cannot help focusing on the close examination in the book of ??Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』) in order to understand Chang hyungwang’s ideas and thoughts better, it is very reasonable and necessary to overcome those difficulties the book has. One of aspects shows its solution. When contemplating his way of collecting its resources and contents for this book, it is clear for us to know that the resources was not just listed without any intention, but meticulously selected with his deep and critical concern. There was his own strict criteria to stand for Neo-Confucianism’s ideas on “Change”(『易』). This fact proves thoroughly that ??Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』) cannot be classified simply as encyclopedia, but it can be evaluated more than it. Therefore, a reliable way of examining Chang hyungwang’s ideas in “Diagrams and explanations on “Change”(『易』)”(『易學圖說』) should be driven into the close examination on his peculiar criteria for the purpose of revealing the unequaled features in his thoughts. This paper aims at placing this examining way on a firm base with possible methodology.
