This paper focuses on the Speculative Society, an important intellectual society in late eighteenth-century Edinburgh. Many notables attended the debate meetings of the society, which was founded in 1764. Meeting topics included a number of important issues ranging from Scottish culture to British politics and world affairs. The Society's activities helped Edinburgh preserve its cultural and academic traditions during the late eighteenth century.
The Scottish Enlightenment was very important as it was the result of interrelations between writers and readers, or perhaps more properly, between intellectuals and ordinary citizens. The cultural renaissance of Edinburgh was largely indebted to the several flourishing societies of the time, but as English industrialization took hold many intellectuals and professionals moved either to London or to other regions in search of success. The resulting intellectual and academic drain away from Edinburgh resulted in the loss its cultural hegemony in Britain.
