The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of labor movement growth in Jeonbuk province. To explain the dynamics of regional labor movement, this paper analyzed the changing relationships between the democratic Trade Union Movement and Federation of Korean Trade Union(FKTU). This paper focuses on the oral data of the activists who participated in democratic trade union movement or FKTU in 1980s to solve data insufficiency that the study of regional labor movement is always faced with.
In the early 1980s, Democratic trade union movement was born in Jeonbuk spontaneously. In those days, FKTU had the strong influence over regional industrial relations by the network with state apparatus. FKTU repressed the democratic trade union movement by using its politics of network. From 1987, democratic trade union movement in Jeonbuk grew and was organized rapidly. An exclusive status of FKTU in labor movement was undercut, in consequence. From that time, the demarcation between democratic trade union movement and FKTU was drawn sharply. FKTU began to seek for ways to secure and even enlarge its influence to local labor unions, and democratic trade union movement in Jeonbuk started to debate what it should do with FKTU. Lastly, FKTU and democratic trade union movement were verifying their own identities through their relationships.
