In May 1825, Charles Ⅹ went to Reims to be crowned and consecrated by the Archbishop of Reims as had been his ancestors before the Revolution. The coronation of Charles Ⅹ was a ceremony symbolic of the return to the past, a finely choreographed spectacle to show that the Revolution (and the Empire) was a just insignificant accident of French history. Admittedly, some aspects of the ceremony were updated as concession to the changed nature of French society: the ritual of the sleeping king was simplified; the insignias of royal power were presented by four of Napoleon's marshals; and the coronation oath was revised to include a promise to uphold the Charter. Yet the overriding symbolism was that of the Ancien Regime monarchy, with pride of place being given to the clergy, which was most evident in the case of the holy ampulla.
It seems that the vast majority of the French, except for some ultra-royalists and the clergy, viewed the resurrection of the legacies of the old French monarchy with amusement, embarrassment, anger, or indifference, despite of the authorities' effort to make the people support and enjoy the coronation. The figure of Napoleon, as Chateaubriand put it, overshadowed everything else. The spectators from inside and outside Reims Cathedral compared the humiliating prostration of Charles X in front of the clergy with the magnificent gesture of Napoleon placing the crown on his own head before the pope. Indeed, the coronation of Charles Ⅹ contributed, together with the controversial Sacrilege Law of 20 April 1825, to further alarm contemporaries already fearful of clerical control, and to make widely diverse groups of men join the anticlerical opposition.
