The story of Maria sleeping, her Assumption and after Maria sitting face to face with Christ in heaven. This image of Maria sitting along with Christ is cal1ed the Coronation of the Virgin. This image was created in the 12th century, a time of intellectual awakening and theological unrest, when the church reviewed its organization with the intent of conquering heresy and Maria lay in the midst of heresy banishment and the rise of individualism. The creation of the Coronation of the Virgin is religiously connected to the ritual of Maria faith, monastery reform movements, and political1y related to the strengthening of the papal authority, the rise of the knight monastic order due to the crusade, etc.
The beautiful theme, the Coronation of Virgin as the queen of heaven after her role as an aid in Christ's salvation project, combined with the imagination of the artist has resulted in abundance of images. The story behind the introduction of the Coronation of the Virgin seems to be deeply related to the church tradition, such as the admiration and festivals of Maria, but even more strongly is the influence of the Pope in his pursuit to realize a papal monarchy. Under the medieval political structure defined by the confrontation between the emperor and the pope, the tympanum of He de France, the king's city, was decorated with the Coronation of the Virgin when the pope's authority gained strength. The church, personified as the bride, and the authority of the pope, the head of that church is granted divine power by Christ. The papal authority visualized that heavenly authority through a female image, Maria. As the papal authority becomes greater, Maria's image changes from that of a bride to that of a queen. In other words, the image of the Coronation of the Virgin recreates the vertical power of the Pope in a highly sophisticated and metaphoric way instead of the Last Judgement, which is depressing, awkward and fearful for the public eye. Thus, the image of Maria is another rhetoric that shows the rituals of admiration for Maria and also papal power in a soft way.
