This study examines the features of Joseon and Jurchen society during the 16th century through the fur trade. While trade between Joseon and neighboring Jurchens began during the late 15th century, it developed in a full-scale manner during the 16th century. The widening of this trade was made possible by Joseon’s need for sable pelts and the Jurchens’ demand for cattle and farming implements. In exchange for the horses and cows as well as ironware produced in the border areas that it exported, Joseon received sable pelts which could be used as tribute items for the king or as lavish goods. This however resulted in a marked weakening of the military strength along the northern area, which in turn led to a significant number ofindividuals residing in the northern area fleeing to the Jurchen side in order to escape the heavy burden of tributes and military taxes they faced at home. Furthermore, the growing inability to meet the economic desires of the Jurchens made it increasingly difficult to incorporate them into Joseon’s system. On the other hand, Jurchen society’s large-scale import of horses and cows as well as ironware from Joseon led to a marked improvement of not only their farming areas, but also their weaponry. In addition, the ability to easily gain access to the goods they desired through trade meant that Jurchens no longer had to go through official Joseon channels anymore. As such, the expansion of trade for sable pelts during the 16th century paved the way for a new phase in Joseon and Jurchen relations.
