The aim of this article is to explore the significance of the Pauline anthropology in his soteriology. To do this, we take two anthropological terms 'conscience' and 'Law' as example and investigate which role they play in the argumentation of Paul. It is often maintained that the conscience is a less important term than the law, but this view results from the ignorance of the fact that the reality reconstructed through Paul's letters does not necessarily correspond to the overall thought of the apostle itself. Now that the Torah considers to be the fundamental norm of ethic for Jews, a question can be raised, which other criterium is to be applied to gentiles. A careful survey of pagan literature compels us to assume that the conscience as well as the Law provide criteria with which one can judge and reflect his own behavior.
Therefore the traditional analogy between the Law and the conscience should not be discarded, but through our exegetical observation reconfirmed. I go so far as to claim that Paul's gentile converts were convinced of their being sinners and so became Christians. This view is supported especially by the argument of Paul in Rom 2:15. There the apostle unmistakably tries to repudiate the gentile privilege in the polemic on the Law, by referring to the implied function of the conscience. 1. Cor 4:4 demonstrates however, that this conscience was relativized after the conversion of Paul's Christians. Needless to say, the good conscience leads no more to the faith in Christ than the Law does. But both of them play a not negative role in the justification: people come to realize that they are sinners and need the gospel, in so far as the conscience and the Law let them reflect their conducts. The observations we made lead us to conclude that the anthropological settings in Paul play rather a decisive role in the Pauline soteriology.
