This thesis is a discussion how conscience can be stipulated and what a role it plays in the Max Scheler’s ethical system. A characteristic of Scheler’s ethics is to be said ‘non-formal value ethics’ in a word, which is developed on the ground of two poles, ‘value’ and ‘person.’ Scheler’s debate on conscience is also focused on the revelation of the reason why ‘resentment’ phenomenon appears and the way how we can overcome ‘value antagonism’ in the modern capitalism civil society.
We elucidate, at first, conscience is basically a ‘value-consciousness’, and it’s organic place is a person which means a bearer of moral value, good and evil. Secondly, we contemplate ‘the order of heart’ to see how we can feel a qualms of conscience. But a disturbing the
order of heart causes directly the destruction of person, and this is a source that we necessarily fall into resentment. So, thirdly, we study what resentment is and how value antagonism can bring about. And lastly we consider a searching the way how we can recover conscience in the modern society.
Scheler appeals to religion, especially Christian in connection with a recovering of conscience. At this point of view Scheler shows us a kind of limitation as religious philosopher, but he stress religion, that has traditionally been played for resolution of human’s inner crisis, must play a role in the modern capitalism civil society, too. We are sure an anthropological synthesis can be result from the reconciliation between philosophy(narrowly ethics) and religion(especially Christian) at last, and Scheler’s debate on conscience has to be basically served for the consideration of a new anthropological synthesis.
