??The purpose of this study is twofold. It is to find out what the demonstrative pronoun(tou, twn) in 2 Timothy 2:21 refers to, and, as a result of this inquiry, to suggest a new Korean translation for the verse.
??For this purpose we survey not only three main Korean translations, but also some of English and German versions. Furthermore, we examine various scholarly interpretations on this matter critically. In view of the results so far achieved by this study, we do not agree to any of these existing interpretations.
??The referent of this demonstrative pronoun in verse 21 is neither 'unrighteousness' in verse 19, 'some (vessels for ignoble use)' in verse 20, nor some items in verses 22-25 like 'youthful lusts'(v, 22) or 'foolish and ignorant arguments'(v, 23). The pronoun refers directly to 'Hymenaeus and Philetus' in verse 17, the false teachers. They are the ones who are to be abandoned. The members of the community are to avoid keeping company with such false teachers. The members are asked to clean them-selves from these false teachers to make themselves pure, and eventually to be God's instruments for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Lord.
??The 'vessels for ignoble use'(v, 20) do not refer to the false teachers, but to some of members of the community. Even though these members, for the time being, show their sympathy for the false teachers and their teachings, they are not to be excommunicated from the community, but to be gently instructed in the hope that God will give them an opportunity to repent and come to know the truth(v, 25).
??Thus we suggest a new Korean translation which reflects the result of this inquiry, 'Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these false teachers, he will be an vessel for honor, made holy, useful to the Master, prepared to do any good work.'
