In his second book, Luke reports that after his first missionary journey and the Jerusalem Council(Acts 13:4-15:23), Paul resumes his second missionary journey(Acts 15:36-18:22). Leaving Syrian Antioch, Paul goes through the region of Phrygia, Galatia and arrives at Troas. From there, he sails for Macedonia through Aegean Sea. At his arrival at Philippi, he experiences a brief imprisonment and moves to Thessalonica. Leaving Thessalonica, Paul and his companions arrive at Beroea.
This article is an exegetical study of Acts 17:10-15, which reports the activities of Paul and his companions from Thessalonica to Beroea. Its purpose is to probe into the following questions: Why did the brothers send Paul and his companions to Beroea? What is the significance of Paul's visit to the synagogue? What does the author mean when he describes the Jews in Beroea as "noble, with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily?" What is the historical value of the report relating to Beroea and Paul's journey to Athens?
