This research aims to investigate the aspects and problems of antonyms used from the 6th version of Education Curriculum to the newly revised version of Education Curriculum in 2007. The main purpose is to seek effective methods of the textbook usage thereby.
The study looks into various concepts which have been discussed up until now. It dissects three types of antonym relations such as degree antonym, complement antonym and direction antonym.
In addition, the research reviews the content of the textbook by The Education Curriculum standard. The review finds that in the 6th version of Education Curriculum, the content is found in the first grade of middle school level; however, in revised version of 2007 curriculum, it is lowered to the 2nd grade of elementary school level with a greater width of change.
It is recommended that the antonym-related contents to be recognized in the first semester of the 2nd grade of elementary school. However, there is a need for a new textbook that can accommodate the interest of elementary school students. As for the understanding-learning section, blue text should be replaced with blank space. In the application-learning section, the textbook should include more stories such as, fairy tales or journals. The writing section that is omitted in the revised version of 2007 curriculum should be restored at the end of each unit.
When the understanding of antonym and antonym relation concept can be put into a practice in the course of the new textbook composition; it is expected to increase a student’s capability of learning vocabulary that is more practical instead of learning vocabulary as just words.
