The purpose of the current paper is to review the current trend on the research of Yang Kyeo-Cho's Literature and to propose the future tasks. Yang Kyeo-Cho fulfilled various positions as a philosopher, politician, journalist, scholar, and novelist and had a significant impact on the literature in the Enlightenment Period of Korea.
There are three trends on the research of the Yang Kyeo-Cho literature up to date. The first trend of the research is to review the impact of his literature on Korean literature world based on the comparative perspectives. This trend points out that the Yang Kyeo-Cho's literature and his viewpoint influenced the literature in the Engligtenment Period of Korea, such as Historic and biographic novels and the new-style novels and closely related with the works of Sin Chae-Ho, Anh Kook-Sun, and Lee Hae-Jo. The second trend focuses on the viewpoint and the literature per se of Yang Keo-Cho. It explains the specific character of his literature by analyzing his individual works such as points of view on the novels, thoughts on the literature, poems, and essays. And the third trend is about the translation. It explains the difference between the original scripts and the copy ones.
There are also a few important tasks needed to be considered and carried out in the future research. First, more specific work is needed to better understand the accomodation and refraction of the Yang Keo-Cho's literature onto Korean literature. Second, the process of how the Western philosophy and literature was accomodated into the Korean literature through China or Yang Kae-Cho and how the Korean literature was influenced by needs to be further discovered. Lastly, the empirical research on the difference between the original scripts and the copy ones of Yang Kae-Cho's literature needs to be conducted.
