This paper describes the activities of the Milyang Son clan in the Catholic village of Sin-ri, Hongju during the persecution. The idea for this study arose from making comparisons between the Milyang Son genealogy, which had been acquired by chance, and records of martyrs. Sin-ri was the final base of Bishop A. Daveluy, the fifth vicar apostolic of Chosun. Missionaries regarded Sin-ri as Chosun's most important Catholic village. Sin-ri was designated as the base for Chosun's highest-ranking bishop and perceived as a place of importance due to the influence of the Milyang Son clan. They were not only founding members of Sin-ri, but also the first to accept the Catholic faith, thus giving birth to a Catholic village. As active supporters of missionary work, they protected French missionaries and offered shelter for fellow Christians who had fled to escape persecution. These activities contributed significantly to the spread of Catholicism in the region and the development of the Chosun Church. Thanks to the activities of the Milyang Son clan, Sin-ri in 1865 was a large Catholic village, consisting of approximately 400 residents who were all strong believers. However, Sin-ri was completely destroyed from the Persecution of Byong-in (1866). Among the 41 names of missionaries that have been identified so far, 43% (18 names) belong to the Milyang Son clan. By investigating a specific family clan across a uniform region, this study may reveal new aspects of the Catholic Church in the days of persecution.
