The purpose of this study was to investigate the tendency of physique growth and physical fitness development of male and female middle school students by using longitudinal data. The physique and physical fitness of 192 middle school students(97 male and 95 female) were repeated measures for 3 years. As for data analysis, the study carried out repeated measures one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA using SPSS statistical program.
First, the height and weight significantly developed for increase in age, and male students showed higher significance in development than female students. The body mass index significantly developed with the age increase but had no significant difference by sex. Second, the speed, power and muscular endurance developed significantly with the age increase, and the higher significance was observed in male students than female students. In flexibility, a significant development was observed as age increases, and female students exhibited higher significance in development than male students. The cardiovascular endurance developed significantly with the age increase in both male and female students.
In conclusion, the greatest developments in height, weight, body mass index, speed, power, abdomen muscular endurance, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance of male students were observed in the age 13-14. For female students, the developments in height, weight, body mass index reached its peak in the age 13-14 while the developments in power, abdomen muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance reached the peak in the age 14-15.
