It is not difficult to find out that individuals' rearmament has extended into be collective phenomenon in Korean Society. The primary objective of this dissertation is to find out the reason why such a social phenomenon happened in Korean society. This study is on the hypothesis that the growth of private security is very related to the modernization of Korean society. A number of structural opportunities came into being through the modernization, and as a result, there was need for private security services. Industrialization, movement and gravitation of people toward cities created new spaces to need for security. These new spaces include three spheres such as industrial, commercial and residential spheres, which were separated from traditional spaces. In industrial areas, large size of industrial parks have been constructed; in commercial areas, mass private property such as department stores has been established; and lots of apartment complex have been constructed in order to reduce high density problem of population in residential spheres. Although criminal problems were getting worse, formal criminal justice agencies failed to control these problems. As collective bonds became loose, criminal problems were changed to individual ones rather than collective ones which people copy cooperatively with. Increase in national income afforded material basis to searching for safety through private security markets. A principal hypothesis in this study follows as: the industrialization and urbanization provided a material foundation for the growth of the private security industry in Korea. The hypotheses of this study are based on mass private property hypothesis, collective security hypothesis, and opportunity structure hypothesis driven by life-style theory and routine activity theory.
The analysis of individuals’ motivation of dependence on the private security services shows that reasons why the private security industry has expanded in residential spaces could be explained by three hypothesis such as mass private property hypothesis, collective security hypothesis and opportunity structure hypothesis. It was found that the reason of growth in the private security industry is better explained by mass private property hypothesis, which emphasizes loss prevention. People who have more goods with high monetary value were more likely to fortify their residential spaces and rearm through private security than others.
