Ignazio Silone, one of Italy's leading writers, was born near Rome at Pescina in 1900. Since youth, he has been an active opponent of Fascism and in 1930, he was forced to flee to Switzerland because of his political activities. Here he wrote his most famous novels, Bread and Wine and Fontamara. During the war he worked with the underground resistance movement against Fascism in Italy.
Bread and wine is a story of the Italian underground and the daring young revolutionary who returned to his native village to try to organize the peasants against the Fascism. Tender, perceptive, rich in humor, it has been hailed by critics as one of the great novels of the twentieth century.
This thesis is to examine how the priests in Bread and wine think and conduct their lives. Through their way of thinking and behaving, we can find out what Ignazio Silone intends to tell us. In the novel the priests play important roles in showing us the thoughts of the writer.
Silone wanted to show us the spiritual conditions of his time and to describe the internal crisis that men were going through. Don Benedetto and his former pupils argued about “What is the scourge of our time?” This argument is very important because it involves the essential parts of the spiritual aspects of men.
Piccirilli, the former pupil of don Benedetto asserts that “The scourge of our time is immodesty in dress”. But don Benedetto says that it is “insincerity between man and man”, which implies the lack of faith between men. Don Benedetto also asserts that the scourge of our time is “the pestilentical Judas Iscariot spirit that poisons public and private life”. Judas Iscariot's rotten spirit also spoils the political and economic systems and institutions.
What Silone wants to indicate to us is the spiritual predicaments of the modern men. It can be said that what the writer wants to show is the new type of consciousness and the new type of man. The new type of man intends to be the man of sincerity, love and rightousness who can deny all kind of overbearing actions, dictatorship and evil-doings. Silone has fought for the human dignities and respects.
