The Brothers Karamazov is one of the greatest works of Fyodor Dostoevsky. It is made up of all the themes which he had introduced in his earlier works. The most important theme is the conflict in human soul. In this connection, this study focuses on the inner world, which the author had surveyed. The structure of The Brothers Karamazov is based on the symmetry, which works the best among his writings.
There are three important themes that represent the duality of human soul; the theme of 'the double', of love, and of the Christianity. Alyosha Karamazov is a kind of the double and represents the world of Zosima. Smerdyakov is for Ivan Karamazov, who becomes a contrastive figure to the elder Zosima. As a result, a new relationship of the double forms among them: the system of complex double. There are various types of love in The Brothers Karamazov. Two of the most important types of love are that of Grushenka and Katerina Ivanovna. The love of Grushenka for Dmitry, which finally turns out to be a true love, is the symmetry of the love of Katerina Ivanovna. Ivan stands for the opposite side of Zosima, who is the symbol of Christian love. Having lost the faith on God, Ivan declares that he is not able to acknowledge the existence of God, who keeps silence on innocent children's suffering. Even though both Dmitry and Ivan are showing the inner conflicts between belief and disbelief, Ivan stands for atheism and ruin, while Dmitry for God and salvation.
The structure of Crime and Punishment are analysed as the form of 'X', each of whose axis represents 'humility' and 'pride'. Like Raskol'nikov's movement on the upper part of the axes, Alyosha is the incarnation of humility, while Ivan of human pride. The worst harm of pride is observed by the illegitimate son, Smerdyakov. In this way, Dostoevsky presents the theme of human nature through the axile of symmetry. Dmitry's salvation from parricide is the author's answer to this problem. In other words, He is in the center of symmetry presented humility and pride as representative pairs of Ivan-Alyosha and Grushenka-Katerina Ivanovna. Thanks for Grushenka and Alysha, that Dmitry was rescued and the possibility for salvation was foreseen from his humble attitude.
In Dostoevsky's works, characters are described as the two split soul. This study has tried to examine how to work the system of inner conflicts through the themes of 'the double', of love, and of the Christianity.
