This essay on English Romanticism aims at clarifying the Romantic quest as bifurcating into two directions, the desire for “joy” and the desire for “beauty,” and also at locating their respective relations with the two different Romantic attitudes toward reality. The desire for “joy,” configuring the general quest of the first-generation Romantic poets, reflects their transcendental attitude toward the material and sensuous reality that surrounds human life. On the contrary, the second-generation Romantic poets undergo a transition of their main vocabulary from “joy” to “beauty,” which reflects their receptive attitude toward that reality.
For the quest for “joy,” the analysis is focused on William Wordsworth as representing the first-generation Romanticism, showing how the fear and pain of mortal reality makes him give up his incipient desire for sensual pleasure and pursue the ideal “joy” instead. But what John Keats achieves as representative of the second-generation Romanticism is the concept of beauty not as ideal or transcendental but as sensuous and physical. It is concluded that Wordsworth’s “joy” leads to the denial of the mortal reality and the substitutive quest for the immortal imagination, while Keats’ “beauty” comprehensively encompasses the mortal reality, however painful and terrible, for the concrete and sensuous joy comes only from the experience of beauty of the physical world.
