It is not easy to determine the realm of reality which an epic poem shows. However, this should be an useful work to understand the other side of the history as well as to reinterpret legendary subject by the actual point of view. In this study we are going to research into the realism specially reflected on the Spanish medieval epic. As a concrete object for our research, we select El Cid's story provided with Per Abbat's text written in 1307. The story is about the great popular hero of the chivalrous age of Spain, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar(also he was given the title of El Cid Campeador) and relating events from his exile from Castile in 1081 until shortly before his death in 1099. The large extent legendary concentrates on his relationship with King Alfonso VI of Leon-Castile. And its theme is twofold, the adventures of the exiled Cid and the marriage of his two daughters -Sol and Elvira- to the Infantes of Carrion.
The great popularity of the story is due to its faithful pictures of the customs of the day it represents, the stylistic simplicity and the old Castilian language El Cid himself used. Per Abbat's text gives us many important informations about some advanced story telling techniques like the harmony of a few different voices of one narrator(identified with the Spanish traditional minstrel juglar), the application of the historical facts as rhetorical resource to produce the narrative coherency, etc. Specially our argument is based on two simple questions: what is the relationship between epic and history?; what is the function of the historical facts in the composition of narrative structure? In conclusion, the Spanish national epic's value is in its realistic style easy to evoke the public's sympathy as well as to allow the medieval Castilian to be a literary language to express the Spanish people's thought.
