During his life, Diderot wasn't renown as a 'litterateur' but best remembered as one of the main contributors of Encyclopedie, ou dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers par une societe de gens de lettres(Dictionary of reasons on science, arts, technology written by many other scholars). For a long time Diderot was regarded as an intellect with "light thinking" lacking precisions in formation. As a philosopher, Diderot didn't attain a strong sense of patience in the reasoning process nor a rationalized system but on the grounds of true humanism he approached the uncertainties of reality and he reveals a new world born from continued experience of human beings.
Achieving a synthesis of his 'biological materialism' in the Reve de d'Alembert and that he has put together various suppositions based on scientific ideologies of the Enlightenment period and also that he wrote his works in illuminating structure of dialogue, it is one of his greatest works and at the same time an outstanding work of philosophy written in literary structure.
The Reve de d'Alembert is a discourse and at the same time it is a dream. By putting in conversations of real individuals such as d'Alembert, Diderot, Lespinasse, Bordeu into a dream formality, Diderot effectively introduces repulsive and daring suppositions and by selecting a Freudian format of having Lespinasse, who speaks on the standpoint of the reader, write down his dream of d'Alembert's words and having him show it to a doctor, Bordeu, and the having Bordeu reinterpret it, Diderot combines dreams with consciousness and insanity with rationality. In the Reve de d'Alembert by making the invisible visible through analogism and metaphors based on resemblance and by retaining the effects of making the obscure transparent, it becomes the most literary form to express science. Perhaps dreams are a huge metaphor in which enables one to shift between reality and imagination, from reality to the unreal.
Literature and philosophy each contribute to discovering the realities of life. Moreover, that reality is not the reality in which that we won't know what the reality is talking about or if that talked reality is true or not as in of those discussed in math but of those discovered from unreasonableness, inspiration and dreams. This dream is in fact the "materialistic mysticism" and furthermore Diderot's dreams as well. And from those dreams "a new order of matters" is born.
