Although the concept of the ecology appeared in 1866, the ecological recognition about the environmental pollution and crisis made its appearance only 30 or 40 years ago. And the ecological recognition that the human being and the nature must live together has been adapted to the literature, so it created the terms like ‘literary ecology’ or ‘ecocriticism’. In Korea ‘ecological literature’ has taken its place.
The encounter between the ecology and the literature does not have long history. But we believe that before the appearance of the term ‘ecological literature’ and the genre this type of literature already has existed due to the function of the literature that diagnoses the times and foresees its problems. And these phenomena are not exceptional in Spanish literature, so we suppose that the ecological literature in Spain existed during the period of Realism.
For the aim of this study, we have examined La gaviota de Fernan Caballero, Penas arriba de Jose Maria de Pereda, Adios, Cordera de Clarin and La aldea perdida de Armando Palacio Valdes. The common points of these novels are that they were published in the period of Realism and are not free from the dualism, which is the product of Spanish costumbrismo and the pre-Realism. In the former two works we hardly find any elements of ‘ecological literature’, while in the works of Clarin and Palacio Valdes we believe there are some elements which show a kind of consciousness of ‘ecological literature’.
This sort of result seems to be due to the dualism that is estimated as a barrier for the development of Spanish Realism. Although there are many kinds of dualism these novels contain the elements of ‘ecological literature’ through the dualism of city-nature and of developmentconservation.
